I have to admit, I love my job.

I’m not talking about my current position at my current workplace. I’m talking about what I do for a living. And what I do for a living is in the world of applications development, applications development and web solutions.

So am I nerd? Well, yes. I will make no secret of my love for all things geeky and digital. I will build a PC for myself or my family rather than buy one ready-made. I am happy to troubleshoot my friends’ home wireless networks or help them choose the right laptop or mobile phone. Like many of my IT comrades, I sat on a tech support help desk in my early working life. And I’m a helpful sort so I will happily respond to requests for advice about any number of techy topics assuming I know a thing or two. In that way, I am just like any other tech-head. I love technology. And I want others to love it too. If I can help someone navigate through the technological maze then I am very happy. If they are burdened by it and it makes them sad or angry? Well then! I’m all into helping them fix that.

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work with some sensational business analysis and application designers who shared the same philosophies as I do. That great websites, great software, and great solutions all have the same thing in common. If the users are involved with its creation, if the software is built to support the business rather than dictate what the user can do and if the design is carefully considered, then the application ends up being successful. People like to use it. It is a welcome addition to a workplace rather than a burden. This is how websites, online applications and software should be built.

I’ve worked in applications design and development ever since. I have worked in client facing roles (after-sales implementation) for websites and online applications, application support, solution design, testing and delivery. I like figuring out exactly what is needed and then delivering on it. So while I am a nerd, I get a lot of satisfaction working with people of the non-technical variety in order to bring about a successful project.
